Industry Award Winners 2005

The annual B.C. Thoroughbred Industry Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Dinner has been perceived over the years as the official launching pad for the coming racing season. The enthusiasm and passion evident among more than 300 guests at RiverRock Casino Resort this past Saturday served notice that Hastings Racecourse will be embarking on another thrilling season beginning Friday, April 14 at 1:25 p.m.

The winner’s circle at centre stage was a busy place at the Industry Awards Dinner, emceed by tuxedoed track announcers Dan Jukich and Mike Heads.

Honoured as the latest Hall of Fame inductees were Ole Nielsen, the Howe brothers - John and Bob - and the incredible chestnut gelding Mike K owned by Breakaway Stables.

Lois and R.J. Bennett accepted the Leading Owner accolades; Carol and Bryan Anderson were saluted as leading breeders; Gary Demorest received the Leading Trainer award; Justin Stein swept both the Leading Rider and Leading Apprentice trophies after winning 124 races in his first full season as a jockey.

Monashee, the first winner of the B.C. Oaks and the Ballerina in the same season in 17 years, was named Horse of the Year. From Ole Nielsen’s Canmor Farms, Monashee won five of seven starts in 2005 and $262,000 for trainer Tracy McCarthy. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Felicella’s Spaghetti Mouse was named B.C. Bred Horse of the Year.

  • Socorro County Older Filly/Mare,B.C. Bred Division
  • Quiet Cash Older Colt/Gelding, Open Division
  • Lord Nelson Older Colt/Gelding,B.C. Bred Division
  • Quiet Cash Champion Sprinter
  • Spaghetti Mouse B.C. Bred Horse of the Year
