Race Analysis for August 6
By Randy GouldingRACE ONE: ALERT N WISE may have tipped his hand with a brilliant five-furlong move July 29 and if he leaves there running he could take them all the way in this abbreviated sprint. The only time he went this far was in his debut at two and he's certainly shown enough speed in his longer sprints. BATTLE OF HASTINGS adds blinkers after setting the pace and tiring in a similar race July 16. The horse that finished in front of him and was disqualified came back to set a track record on Sunday. SANTANA WINDS looked good winning at this distance in May and after his second in the bushes he ran another good race to finish third last Sunday. VICTIM OF LOVE will have to scratch after setting a track record on Sunday and with the win he is ineligible for the condition.
RACE TWO: CALL ME JEWEL has been running decently while facing tougher and should appreciate the 50-percent drop in price and the 12-pounds she's shedding with Pacheco taking the call. She has been closing strongly in most of her races and this could set up nicely for her. FINE AS FEATHERS comes out of the same race as the top pick and after forcing the issue early she tired late. If she can sit off of SNOWBIRD PASS she might be able to hang around long enough to at least pick up a slice. QUATRE DAMES came back with a sharp five-furlong move after finishing a distant second in her first try going long. Her trainer has heated up lately and she could be very live with the move back to sprint.
RACE THREE: TAYLOR SAID fired a bullet going three-furlongs out of the gate July 24 and he is bred to be quick. His sire is a decent debut sire with 12 percent of his 2-year-olds winning first time out and this guy is a full-brother to the very fast Afleet Deal His trainer also has solid stats with first time starting 2-year-olds - 21 percent over the past 5 years. ICECAP has worked well enough and she is by an excellent debut sire who is 20 percent with first time starting 2-year-olds. Icecap is also a full-sister to $106K stakes winner Mr. Expedient who won his debut at two. G ITS LATE has been firing bullets and her latest move might not have been the best of the day, but any time a 2-year-old goes :34 and change for three-furlongs it gets our attention. Her dam was a multiple stakes winner and one of her siblings won their 2-year-old debut.
RACE FOUR: GRAYROSS GAL has worked sharply leading up to her first start since she faded versus tougher and she was a pretty easy winner the last time she ran at this level. She has run well fresh in the past and from the looks of her bullet four-furlong move July 31 she's primed for another big effort. REMARKABLY FREE is the question mark in the race. She won all three of her starts last year but went home pretty early and she faded after being up close to a blistering pace in her comeback race. She's taking a substantial drop and she should be the one they are chasing here. She should be tighter for this but she is coming off the worst performance in her short career and they sent her home last August for a reason. EMMITT'S GIRL is as honest as they come and at the least should be part of any exotics ticket. She could also win this if the top two hook up early.
RACE FIVE: CANDLEINTHEWIND has flopped as the chalk in her last two but she gets in with a feather and she should be able to stalk what could be a lively battle up front. She worked a sharp half-mile with Pacheco aboard last Sunday so he should have a good enough feel for her. J J'S WANDER set honest fractions and held on well to finish second in a much improved effort in her latest. This will be her second straight start in a two-turn sprint and she has enough speed to take advantage of her inside post. SPICY HOT WASABI goes for a new barn and maybe she was trying to tell us something when she worked a bullet three-furlongs in :34.30 seconds Aug. 1. FINAL PLEASURE ran a much improved race with blinkers in her latest and at the least should be considered for the exotics.
RACE SIX: SAVO ISLAND looked a lot better when he was drawn inside in the race that was cancelled last Saturday but he has enough tactical speed so he shouldn't have to go too wide on the first turn. He figures to get a nice trip from just off what figures to be an honest pace. MONEY X CHANGE will be part of the pace and if he gets away on his own he could be gone. LUKIN AWESOME might have something to say about that, however. SELIMAN made a strong late move in the same race MONEY X CHANGE held on to finish second in and he could certainly win this if things fall his way. GALAHAD has been right there in his last two starts but he probably wants more distance. Consider using him on the bottom half of your exotic tickets.
RACE SEVEN: AINTNOMISBEHAVIN looked pretty strong winning her latest and it was the first time she went around three-turns. Not sure what to make of her five-furlong move in 1:08 and change Aug. 1 but her trainer is having a big meet and she also had a bullet four-furlong move July 24. SAINTSBURY should appreciate the move back to a route after forcing the issue and fading in her latest sprint. She looked pretty good winning her only route attempt from a stalking position and a similar trip behind a faster pace could be in the cards here. OUR COCO BEANS once again gets in with a feathery 103 pounds and she carried her light weight the whole way when she faced older conditional fillies and mares in her latest. She will have to deal with a quicker pace today, however.
RACE EIGHT: MALIGNE LAKE has shown plenty of speed in her two-turn sprints and should be tough to handle if she breaks alertly going this distance. She is also taking a substantial drop and shedding 12-pounds. SIMILKAMEEN STORM has finished second in both of his starts going this distance and he probably would have won his last race if he didn't blow the turn. He's worked around two-turns since he ran and we'll assume he'll get it right this time. LUCK OF THE DEVIL added Lasix for his latest and he almost led the whole way in a two-turn sprint. He's had a sharp work since he ran and he could take a big step forward as a second time Lasix user. TRIEX has won a couple in the bushes, had a strong work here August 1, and attracts the leading rider. Interesting.
