Race Analysis - Saturday, May 29
Analysis by Randy GouldingRACE ONE: GRAYROSS GAL is capable of handling the small jump in class and she certainly won't mind the move to a distance she has won nine races at. She seems as good as ever at 10 and with her good tactical speed she figures to get the kind of trip that wins a lot of races here. BEAUTIFUL BREEZE made a strong late move into a slow pace while going 4-wide and could have more speed to run at if LIZ'S BROOM and BEAULAH FAY hook up early. She also figures to get a clean trip from an outside post in a small field. LIZ'S BROOM runs well fresh and her new trainer has solid stats with horse returning from this kind of layoff. Not sure why her latest work was so slow but she looked pretty sharp in most of her other previous moves. BEAULAH FAY is taking a substantial drop for this and could be dangerous if she clears early from her inside post.
RACE TWO: XINANTECATL may have tipped his hand with a bullet 3-furlong move in :35.80 seconds out of the gate May 23 and his trainer does an excellent job with his babies. Over the past couple of years he is 25 percent with first time starting 2-year-olds. PIGTAILS is the only horse in the field with a start and should move forward with the experience behind her. She also came back with a sharp 5-furlong move and is dropping into a maiden claimer. Over the past 5 years Condilenios is 15 percent when he drops them into a maiden claiming race for the first time. LEGAL LEGACY has had a couple of decent works out of the gate and is by a sire who is 13 percent with first time starting 2-year-olds. Her dam won and finished third in two starts as a baby so there is a bit of win-early breeding here.
RACE THREE: RALLYING CRY takes another drop in search of his first win at Hastings and there is a good chance he'll get it here. He has never won going this far but he has placed in a Grade 3 going one-mile so he should be able to handle the distance. His last was certainly an improved effort and he figures to be a lot closer to the pace with the move to a route. GREAT PRINCE is coming back pretty quickly so Barroby must have liked the way he came out of his winning race last Monday. He should have an honest enough pace to work with and the barn certainly heated up last weekend with three wins. VINTNER made up some ground in the same race RALLYING CRY exits and he really doesn't want to sprint. He figures to take a big step forward in his second start of the year and he'll relish the extra yardage. SUPER STEVE looks like the one they'll be chasing and could take them a long way.
RACE FOUR: J J'S ORCHID made a strong move to take the lead turning for home but then just go caught at the wire when she came back from a long layoff. She figures to move forward in the second start of her current form cycle and it will be just the third start of her career so there is plenty of upside here. ELUSIVE INTENTIONS also made a strong late move but she wasn't really a threat to win the race and her lack of speed is once again going to be a problem going this distance. CHAI LITE could be ready for a peak effort her third start and she looks like the one they'll have to catch. She could also move forward as a second time Lasix user. I'VEGOTFISHUES comes out of a barn that can have them ready to go first time and all of his siblings are winners including six time sprint winner Fury's Allstar. Barn likes to play so the tote board could give us a few more clues.
RACE FIVE: BURJ DUBAI is certainly the most interesting horse on the card today. He cost $1 million as a yearling, and when he first arrived at Hastings after being sold for a lot less he was about as unruly as they get. He has changed considerably since he was gelded and his six and one-half furlong move out of the gate in 1:18.40 seconds May 22 was nothing less than sensational. He can run but you definitely want to take a good look at him in the paddock and on post parade to see how he is behaving before you make your final decision. BRED ROYAL posted a bullet 6-furlong move in his final prep and should be ready for a strong effort in his first start for his new connections. The horse he finished second to at Golden Gate on Oct. 2 ran a big race to finish second in a $75K optional race here May 2. DON'TWAITFORME showed a lot of talent when he debuted in a maiden special weight race May 14 and a similar effort puts him squarely in the picture. He's coming back pretty quickly for a horse that ran as hard as he did in his debut, and his trainer is 3 for 53 with second time starters over the past five years so we're going to try and beat him.
RACE SIX: LASTING SPICE made a strong impression when she won a sprint at this level in her first start this year and now we'll see if she can go this far with just one sprint behind her. Her dam won going long, and her only sibling to try a route was able to win one of five races going around three turns. She is in the right barn for the job - over the past 5 years McCarthy is 22 percent with horses stretching out for the first time. QUILLO'S INTENTION is taking a substantial step up but she was good enough to place in a stakes race going this distance last year and she looked pretty sharp in her win over $12,500 non-winners of two in her latest. RAINBOWSINTHEWOOD is the only horse in the field with a win at the distance and she has done it twice. VanOverschot also has strong stats in the sprint to route category. SEDONA MISS may have bounced off of her first start this year and could rebound with the blinkers coming off.
RACE SEVEN: TOUGH TORQUE comes right back for the same price following a solid second May 15 and he figures to take a big step forward with a race under his belt. He also has decent tactical speed and should get a nice trip from just off of what could be a lively battle up front. FRENCH ROAST didn't show much in his initial start this year but he is 9-years-old now and may have needed the race to loosen up. He is dropping to a new low and the only concern is that there are no interim works showing since he ran on May 1. Nonetheless, anything out of this barn gets our respect and they wouldn't lead him over if they didn't think he had a chance to win. COLONDELIVERY gets off of the rail where he had a rough trip last time and he will certainly appreciate the easier company he's facing with the drop to bottoms. AFLEET MAC romped when he came back from a long layoff last year and he looked pretty sharp in his 5-furlong move on May 25. He could be live at what should be a decent price.
